Watch out for the unexpected when trading shares

You may have noticed with the shares that you hold that if the company comes out with an unexpected piece of good news the shares climb.

Conversely the company may report extremely good news, say a trebling of profits, yet the shares fall. This is because the news was expected and already fully discounted. Confirmation that the business was trading well came as no surprise so no new buyers came into the market while some existing holders decided to bank a profit.
