The key point about a possible challenge by foreign secretary, David Milliband, to Gordon Brown for the leadership of the Labour party is that, if it happens and Milliband becomes leader it is likely to bring forward dramatically the date of the next general election.
This would be good news because of the certainty of a Tory victory and also because, despite some sympathetic press comment to the contrary even in right-leaning newspapers, Gordon Brown has been hopeless as prime minister.
It is probably an exaggeration to describe him as one of the most charisma-challenged human beings on the planet especially given the competition from other cabinet members. However his real problem is his whole approach.
