Last gasp holiday? Get that insurance
Shop around for travel insurance in the rush to find a last-minute ski holiday

Don’t forget to shop around for travel insurance in the rush to find a last-minute ski holiday, or you could end up paying three times more than necessary.

With half term looming, many families will be looking to jet off on a late season winter sports break. But whether it’s skiing, snowboarding or tobogganing, your chances of injury are notably higher compared to more traditional holidays, making travel cover a must.

Unfortunately, the fact you’re more likely to claim means insurers tend to charge significantly more for winter sports cover. As a general rule, this tends to cost twice that of an insurer’s standard policy.

That makes it more important than ever that you find a good deal.

Difference is astounding

We shopped around for quotes for a family of four at six well known travel insurers, and found a remarkable difference between them.

Insure & Go came out cheapest at £30.26, followed by Columbus (£37.40) and Go Travel Insurance (£57.36) in third.

At the opposite end of the scale, Direct Line wanted to charge an astounding £95.49 – triple the cost of our cheapest quote.

Choose the specialist

Another important factor to note is that the three specialist travel insurers – Insure & Go, Columbus, and Go Travel Insurance – were all cheaper than those who tended to target all areas of insurance.

In fact the difference is quite significant: The average quote for the specialist insurers is £41.67, compared to £81.33 for the others.

So if your holiday truly is last minute, and you only have time to look at one or two quotes, make sure you target the specialist insurers.

Final tips and pointers

You can sometimes get an even cheaper policy by applying online, as certain insurers offer discounts for doing so.

These are usually in the region of 5-10%.

Once you do find a policy to your liking, make sure you read the fine print thoroughly as this is where the exclusions are hidden.

These can be notoriously fickle, stipulating things like how far from the piste you can venture before a claim is invalidated, and so on. If you’re going to fork out good money on a policy, make sure understand what it is you’re covered for.
