Car loans are unsecured which means they allow you to borrow from £1,000 to a maximum of £25,000 without putting up any assets as collateral. When comparing car loans you should check the Total Amount Repayable (TAR) and the monthly payment (without PPI) - these are a better guide to the real costs of car loans than the APR.

Many loan providers bundle Payment Protection Insurance (PPI) into their loan quotes, even though this is frowned on by the Financial Service Authority (FSA). Whatever you do, never accept a loan quote that includes the cost of PPI. Buying this insurance packaged up with another financial product is almost always bad value.

If you must have PPI then use our comparison tables to buy a standalone policy which will cost you far less. Always read the small print with PPI insurance to make sure that it is right for your circumstances, e.g. the self-employed should never have redundancy insurance as it will rarely pay out.

Personal loans are used by people who wish to borrow less then £25,000, if you wish to borrow more than that you will need to take out a Secured Loan, also known as a HomeOwner Loan.

Secured Loans can be used to fund Home Improvements, for Debt Consolidation or by people with Bad Credit or Impaired Credit who cannot get access to other credit.
