If you buy a typical unit trust direct from the fund manager you will often pay 5% of your investment out in initial charges - on a £5,000 investment you’d pay £250. But, if you buy through a fund supermarket, which gives you access to hundreds of funds run by different fund managers, you will usually pay no more than 1.5% - a saving of £175 on a £5,000 investment - and many funds are available with no initial charges at all.
