Gas and electricity

The average annual saving for a customer who switches their gas supplier is £80-£140, and the average saving for an electricity switcher is £60. At EveryInvestor we recommend that you use a third-party website like uswitch.com to search through and compare the details of the available deals.
Here are some background facts and figures about switching:
  • The gas industry was deregulated in 1998, 7 million out of 20 million gas customers have switched away from British Gas since then (Ofgem).
  • 90,000 people switch gas suppliers each week
  • The electricity industry was deregulated in 1999; 10.2 million out of 26 million electricity customers have changed suppliers since then.
  • 70,000 switch electricity suppliers each week
  • 71% of people who switch choose a ‘duel fuel’ deal. In other words, one supplier provides both gas and electricity
  • In a MORI survey carried out in 2001 80% of participants said that they had switched to save money, and 90% said that switching was easy and that they had no problems.
As you can see many people have taken advantage of their ability to shop around for a better deal – we believe that you should investigate how much you can save.
